FZer Spotlight: Lauren Gossett – Grand Rapids Controller

July 22, 2026

We sat down with Lauren Gossett, FZ's new Controller, to explore how the insights she's developed from her previous roles are shaping her approach to leadership today. Here's what she had to say!

What are key strengths you bring from your previous roles that you believe will contribute to your success in this new role?

Looking back on my career, a key strength of mine has been leading teams. I have many years of experience managing groups with a wide range of experience levels. I've learned that recognizing individual needs and adapting my coaching and communication style accordingly is essential to success. My ability to understand details while also seeing the big picture allows me to excel in identifying opportunities to improve processes.

What skills or habits have stayed with you as you've progressed from public accounting into leadership roles?

I have always been detail oriented, organized, and humble. I also believe it is important to have a people-first mindset, because business cannot succeed without the work of the people in the field. From a leadership perspective, understanding the needs of the field team is something I have always made a priority.

How do you build trust and foster collaboration when you step into a new organization?

I believe trust is earned by proving reliability and responsiveness. Being engaged within the organization and understanding how each department supports the others helps build that trust and encourages collaboration. Businesses have different departments for a reason, and each one plays a vital role in helping the organization succeed.

How do you build trust and foster collaboration when you step into a new organization?

I believe in being available for questions, and maintaining an open-door policy. I want people to feel comfortable coming to me anytime with questions or concerns. From a development standpoint, I've learned that it is important to the take time up front to show and explain a process so that someone understands not just what they are doing, but why they are doing it. In the long run, it leads to greater efficiency.

During your first year at FZ, what are you most excited to build, improve, or contribute to?

I am excited to continue improving FZ's scalability. As the company grows, it's important to be able to take on new projects without having to reinvent the wheel each time. I also look forward to continuing to help make the integrations with new systems and processes as seamless as possible.
