Feyen Zylstra honored with two wins at the 2026 Excellence in Construction Awards.
(GRAND RAPIDS, MI) -- Feyen Zylstra celebrated an incredible evening at the Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) Western Michigan Excellence in Construction Awards, where the company was honored with two awards that recognize the hard work and dedication of its team. FZ earned the award in the Electrical: $2-10 Million category for the City of Grand Rapids Public Service Center Buildings B, C, D, and E project, while Director of Marketing E.B. Sonheim was recognized as Young Professional of the Year.
The Young Professional of the Year Award annually honors professionals under 40 who are top performers in their field and demonstrate a clear vision for the future of the commercial and industrial construction industries.
Sonheim has spent more than 13 years at Feyen Zylstra. In her role, she has played a key part in shaping FZ's brand voice, helping to communicate who FZ is to employees, customers, and the communities it serves. Known for her commitment to excellence, passion for the trades, and ability to tell meaningful stories, E.B.'s impact extends across FZ and throughout the industry.
FZ was also honored to receive the award in the Electrical: $2-10 Million category for the City of Grand Rapids Public Service Center Buildings B, C, D, and E project. The City of Grand Rapids consolidated its Public Works, Fleet, Facilities, and Parks operations into a $98.2 million, 300,000-square-foot campus. Feyen Zylstra delivered complete electrical systems for four buildings, overcoming design flaws, equipment mismatches, and other challenges with innovative solutions. The project improved efficiency, sustainability, and collaboration and was completed without schedule delays or safety incidents.
The evening also brought additional recognition for FZ, with the Amway Commons project receiving a nomination in the Low Voltage Systems category and Joel VanDuyn, Electrical Service Technician, being recognized as a finalist for Craft Professional of the Year.
Joel has served as an Electrical Service Technician at Feyen Zylstra for over two decades. His technical expertise, problem-solving instincts, and steady leadership have earned him a reputation as a trusted and reliable resource. Whether troubleshooting a complex machine issue, programming lighting controls, or guiding a customer through critical decisions, Joel approaches every situation with clarity, creativity, and precision.
Feyen Zylstra was also nominated in the Low Voltage Systems category for its work on the Amway Commons project, which modernized administrative spaces at Amway’s Global Headquarters in Ada, Michigan. The project upgraded offices, collaboration areas, and IT infrastructure, including fiber backbone, wireless access points, and security systems. Rigorous testing and coordination ensured seamless integration, supporting Amway’s long-term success.
