Diesel vs. Natural Gas Generators: Pros and Cons of Each

June 25, 2021 Tagged With: diesel, electrical services, generators, natural gas, pros and cons

Both diesel and natural gas generators have their advantages and disadvantages and are constantly evolving and improving.

Diesel Generators

Pros:

  • Require less maintenance, translating into less maintenance cost
  • Sturdy, dependable, and reliable
  • Fuel efficient as compared to the same volume of gas needed
  • Safer—diesel is less flammable and explosive
  • Longer life span
  • Versatile

Cons:

  • Cost of fuel is dependent on fluctuations in fuel prices
  • Maximum operating runtime is restricted by fuel tank capacity
  • Storing and keeping fuel tank can be a challenge in the case of a weather/natural disaster
  • Produce more noise (especially older models)
  • Cause heavy pollution
  • Produces a strong odor
Natural Gas Generators

Pros:

  • Readily-available fuel source (connect to pipeline fuel delivery system)
  • Cost less to build
  • Fuel burns cleaner than diesel
  • Does not produce a strong odor

Cons:

  • Require more frequent maintenance, resulting in more maintenance costs and downtime
  • Shorter life span
  • Costly to run
  • Take up more space
  • Natural disasters and the utility company can disrupt natural gas flow
  • Emits more carbon dioxide than diesel
  • Can be extremely explosive and a fire hazard

With the arrival of newly developed fuel sources (like biodiesel), there may be more efficient ways to provide necessary power while lessening environmental impact and improving air quality.
